(And What to Do If You Already Have)
If you’re expecting a baby, chances are you’re already being flooded with decisions — bassinets, bottles, car seats, and birth plans. And in all the chaos, one thing that often gets pushed to the bottom of the to-do list is booking a newborn photographer.
As a professional newborn and baby photographer based in Sydney’s Inner West, I often get last-minute enquiries from lovely but slightly panicked parents who just had their baby and suddenly realise they haven’t booked a session. So, let’s talk about why it’s best to book before your baby arrives — and what to do if you’ve left it a little late.
📆 1. The Best Time to Book Is During Your Second Trimester
Ideally, I recommend booking your newborn session during your second trimester. Why? Because most photographers (myself included) only take a limited number of newborns each month to allow flexibility around unpredictable birth dates. Booking early secures your spot and ensures you're not scrambling once your baby is here.
🍼 2. Newborns Are Best Photographed in the First 7–14 Days
Those dreamy, sleepy newborn photos that you've seen? They're usually taken in the first two weeks of life, when babies are naturally curled and sleepy. After that, babies become more alert and less likely to settle into those peaceful poses (though older newborn sessions can still be beautiful in a different way!).

😬 3. “Oops, I Forgot!” — What to Do If Baby’s Already Here
No stress — it happens all the time. If you’ve just had your baby and haven’t booked a session yet, still reach out! I often have last-minute flexibility, and I photograph babies up to 6 weeks of age. While your gallery might look a little different than those early-week sessions, you’ll still walk away with timeless, meaningful images.
📸 4. Booking Ahead Means a Smoother Experience
When you book in advance, I’ll pencil in your due date and keep space around that time for your session. Once baby arrives, you just send me a quick message and we lock in a date — easy. You’ll also receive a session prep guide, including what to wear and how to prepare, so you feel calm and confident walking into the studio.
❤️ Final Thoughts
Whether you’re 20 weeks pregnant or holding your newborn right now, it’s never too early (or too late) to capture these precious moments. As a mum of three myself, I know just how fast this season disappears.
Don’t wait for “the perfect time” — because the magic is in the now.
