Family photography is all about connection, love, and those little moments that make your family unique. While posed portraits are beautiful, some of the most treasured images are the unplanned, candid moments—the giggles, snuggles, and spontaneous interactions that show real emotion.
If you're preparing for a baby and family photography session, here are some tips to help capture those natural, heartfelt moments.
1. Keep It Playful
Children, especially babies and toddlers, respond best to play, not being asked to say "cheese". Instead of asking them to smile for the camera, engage them in an activity they love—tickles, peekaboo, or a gentle game of “Where’s your nose?” This keeps them relaxed and results in genuine laughter and expressions.
2. Move Around Together
Some of the best family photos come from movement. A gentle sway while holding your baby, walking hand-in-hand with your little one, or even a playful twirl with an older child can create beautifully natural interactions that look effortless and heartfelt.

3. Focus on Connection, Not Perfection
Rather than worrying about getting everyone looking at the camera at the same time, focus on your family’s natural connection. Snuggle in close, whisper something sweet to your baby, or simply hold hands. These small gestures tell a bigger story and create meaningful images.
4. Embrace the Little Moments
Sometimes the in-between moments are the most magical—the way your baby reaches for your hand, a sleepy yawn, or the quiet way your child rests their head on your shoulder. Let these moments happen naturally, and don’t rush through them.
5. Let the Kids Lead
Children have their own personalities, and embracing that makes for the most authentic images. If your toddler wants to explore, let them! If your baby wants extra cuddles, lean into it. The best photos happen when little ones feel safe and free to be themselves.
6. Keep It Comfortable
Choose a location and setting where your family feels at ease. Whether it's in my cozy photography studio with soft blankets and a vintage chaise lounge (hello, new favorite prop in my studio!) or outdoors in the golden light, a comfortable setting makes a big difference in capturing relaxed, natural moments.
7. Be Present & Enjoy the Moment
The best way to get beautiful candid photos? Simply be in the moment with your family. Laugh, cuddle, and interact as you normally would. Your love and connection will shine through, creating images you’ll cherish forever.
